What Our Light Installation Work Covers

There's a wide range under the light installation banner. Here's the typical scope we run across Dee Why homes, from downlights to outdoor fittings.

Downlight fitting. LED downlights wired in, whether it is a full room retrofit or just a couple of new points in a renovated space.

Pendant and feature lighting. Circuits run and switched for pendants, chandeliers, or feature fittings over a kitchen island or dining table.

Garden and outdoor fittings. Weatherproof lighting for the yard and front path, wired to a circuit of their own.

Switch and dimmer upgrades. Old toggle switches swapped for dimmers or smart switches, matched to the circuit they sit on.

Sensor and security lighting. Floodlights that trigger on movement, fitted where the driveway or entry needs eyes on it after dark.

Ceiling and skylight fittings. Fittings wired into tighter ceiling spaces, including checks for safe clearance around insulation.

Six Signs Your Home Is Asking for Light Installation

Lighting problems are easy to put off until they are not. These are the signs Dee Why homeowners usually call us about.

  • Flickering or dimming lights that do not fix themselves when you change the bulb.
  • A switchboard circuit that trips whenever a particular light gets turned on.
  • Exposed or ageing wiring behind a light fitting you are planning to replace.
  • No lighting at all in an extension or converted space.
  • A ceiling fitting that is warm to touch or shows scorch marks.
  • Wanting to move from halogen downlights to cooler-running LEDs.

Why Dee Why Properties Call For This

Dee Why's housing stock spans early cottages built from fibro and brick through to rendered walk-up flats and newer apartment towers. Howard Avenue is a good example, where that construction mix shows up block by block.

A fibro ceiling needs a different approach to a downlight retrofit than a solid brick-veneer roofline, mostly around insulation clearance and how the fitting sits in the cavity. Render finishes change how an outdoor fitting gets mounted too, since render chips more easily than exposed brick.

That mix is why we check the construction before quoting, not just the fitting you want installed.

The Factors Behind a Light Installation Quote

Access and point count are usually what set the price on a lighting job. These are the details we look at before quoting.

  • How many points are going in, and whether that's fresh wiring or a like-for-like swap.
  • Roof space to move around in, tighter again where insulation fills the cavity.
  • Fitting choice, whether that's a plain downlight or a statement pendant.
  • Dimmers or smart controls, if you want the switching upgraded too.
  • Anything unsafe the old wiring reveals once we get a fitting open.

A fibro ceiling on an older Dee Why cottage often needs IC-rated fittings and extra care around clearance, which can add a little time to an otherwise straightforward downlight job.

Every quote is free and fixed before we start, with $50 off for new customers booking their first job.

How the Job Runs and How Long It Takes

A single downlight swap can be done inside an hour, while a full room of new points is more of a half-day visit.

  1. Walkthrough and points confirmed. We check ceiling access and confirm exactly where each fitting and switch will go.
  2. Circuit made safe. The relevant circuit is switched off and locked out before any old fitting comes down.
  3. Fittings go in. Each downlight, pendant or switch is connected and secured, circuit by circuit through the job.
  4. Testing and sign-off. We check every circuit, then lodge a Certificate of Compliance for the finished work.

What NSW Requires for Light Installation

Light installation counts as electrical work under AS/NZS 3000, so a licensed electrician has to handle it, no matter how minor the job looks.

Notifiable work gets signed off once it is finished and tested. DIY electrical work is illegal in NSW, which catches out a few homeowners who assume swapping a light fitting is a job they can do themselves.

Where a lighting circuit shares a board with other circuits, we check the safety switch (RCD) covering it is doing its job properly too.

What You Get When We Do Your Light Installation

SAL and Beacon Lighting are the brands on our van, chosen because they hold up, not because they're the cheapest box on the shelf.

Every light installation carries a lifetime workmanship guarantee, and we lodge a Certificate of Compliance on every notifiable job so there is a paper trail.

Fittings themselves carry their own 12-month product warranty, entirely apart from the labour side of things.

Servicing Nearby Homes Too

Lighting work often turns up alongside other jobs. A switchboard upgrade sometimes comes first if the board cannot safely carry new circuits, and plenty of customers roll it into a wider residential electrician job while walls or ceilings are already open.

We service Dee Why homes right across the suburb, plus Cromer, Narraweena and Curl Curl nearby.

Common questions

Light Installation FAQs

A handful of things people ask before locking in a lighting job.

What sort of timeframe should I expect for the job?

Budget half a day for most lighting jobs done in one visit, stretching out if we need to run fresh cable through the ceiling.

Is my older place suitable for light installation?

Definitely, we're in Dee Why's older cottages constantly. Fibro ceilings and ageing wiring just mean we take a bit more care getting there.

Should I buy the fittings myself, or does that come from you?

Whichever suits you. Bring your own fittings and we'll fit them, or leave the sourcing to us entirely.

Do you handle strata or apartment light installation in Dee Why?

Yes, that's a regular part of the workload. Where circuits are shared, we'll loop in the building manager before starting.

Does the whole house lose power while you work?

Not at all, we only isolate the circuit in question. Everywhere else in the house keeps running.

What usually tells people they need light installation?

Flickering lights, a circuit that trips on one particular switch, or simply wanting to move off older halogen downlights.
